Shaken, not stirred…

As I sit here in Wellington and write this post it is pouring with rain outside. Flooding is closing roads in our area and we’ve had a major earthquake (we are all fine – a bit shaken but taking it all in our stride!) At 12:02am on 14 November 2016 we were shaken awake by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake (that’s a biggie for those not familiar with earthquakes!) We huddled with our kids, reassuring them, scrambling for the radio to hear the latest news updates. We were lucky not to lose our power so we were able to track the shakes live on GeoNet and news websites. We rolled through the aftershocks, and then tried to get some sleep. To say the least, not a lot of sleep happened at our house. At these times our immediate thoughts turn to our families and loved ones – touching base to check all is well. We have family locally and also in Australia, our thoughts were to let them know we were safe and not to worry. Technology is wonderful! From our family to yours – keep safe and dry out there, be kind to one another and touch base with […]

    Sweet Life!

Some jobs are pretty sweet! (pun intended!) Brief: Create images that make the lollies….. yeah, I stopped at the word lollies too! In all seriousness, Jen – the lovely owner of Wellington based lolly shop Sarkara (BTW she has my childhood dream job – Lolly Shop Lady!), asked us to create some images of her new gift boxes for her online lolly shop (sounds dangerous doesn’t it?!) We were able to help Jen pin down her many ideas into a brief with clear photographic deliverables, and got some tasty photographs! We were really taken with Jen’s ideas and approach – send candy to a friend as an alternative to flowers – brilliant! We’ve all sent flowers to someone and struggled to describe what we want to the busy florist at the end of the phone… in the end, crossing our fingers, surrendering our credit card number and hoping that the bouquet will look good on arrival. This fresh approach allows the customer to select the type of gift box (several price point options available) and then choose the exact lollies that you’d like to go into the box. Genius! Go on, give it a try online, or go and visit […]

Our children are a little blasé about cameras and taking photographs, I guess with both parents being photographers it’s not really surprising. The long weekend that our daughter got to ‘go to work with Mummy!’ sure was an event in the life of Miss S! We were going away together. Alone. She was going to be the big girl and be my ‘assistant’ – a huge responsibility in the eyes of a 6 year old! ‘Are we going to use the big black camera’s Mummy?’ Our road trip to Taupo cemented some memories for us both, which I hope she will remember fondly one day when she takes her own child away with her on an adventure… Here are some images I captured on my iPhone. Yes, I shoot on an iPhone as well!  I’m a firm believer in keeping it simple – I’m a busy mum as well as a photographer and I don’t carry my ‘big black cameras’ with me all the time – crikey I’d have muscles like the Incredible Hulk if I did! Hmmm come to think of it, my son would think that would be pretty cool… anyway I digress…! My iPhone is small, convenient, […]

    Taupo Travels

Have camera, will travel! Last month presented the opportunity to photograph a lovely B&B in Taupo. It also presented a wonderful opportunity for a road trip with our daughter. As we drove through Taupo and headed on the road out towards Acacia Bay, my mind was flooded with my own childhood memories of our summer holidays in Taupo – my grandparents, hot pools, horse riding, fishing, walking and exploring the lake edge and surrounding rivers. The feeling of peace and familiarity was reassuring and I knew this would be a successful trip. Jane welcomed us in her driveway. My photographers eye was honed, the warm late afternoon light which was accentuating her home was so inviting that I was itching to pick up my camera and start shooting… the lake views, the majestic redwood trees, the serenity… Jane is a wealth of knowledge – mountain biking, walking, kayaking – whatever your adrenaline fix is she’ll know where you can go to get it – and it’ll be close by! Take the time to stop, talk and listen. A local is usually more than willing to share the hidden gems of their home town with someone who is curious. I find […]

    I’m Back!

…well I never really went away or stopped working … I’ve just had some ‘quiet’ time to grow these two mini-me’s! Our youngest ‘baby’ will start school next year and while I admit I will shed a tear or two on his first day (and probably skip down the school driveway with a huge grin on my face!), I’m also excited to be able to dedicate more daylight hours to our photography business and share with you what we’ve been up to. First up you may have noticed we have redesigned our website! What do you think? It was refreshing to take the old site down and build a new one from scratch – I enjoyed going through our terabytes of images (17+ years of professional shooting for two photographers does result in many terabytes!), reliving some jobs and stumbling across images I’d long since forgotten about. Not to do things by halves, we are now starting on Chris’s website as well – see www.theimage.co.nz We photograph buildings, machines, anything really, but at heart we are photographers of people; I don’t think that’ll ever change! The details, expressions and environments of people capture our imaginations. People are interesting! And food […]
